The Generation Z Grind: Why 77% Want to be Their Own Boss

Generation Z is leading the change with respect to employment. As a fascinating fact, 77% of this cohort dreams of being self-employed, a study published by Upwork in 2024 has revealed. This new generation’s aspiration to seek jobs in nonconventional areas is in stark contrast to their predecessors who were content with a stable 9 to 5 job that was widely accepted and practiced. Rather, Gen Z seeks to take a different route altogether, one filled with self-employment, freelance opportunities, and pure independence, looking at the benefits of registering a company.

Reasons For the Change

The perception that Gen Z holds is often shaped by the influence of growing up in an age dominated by technology. Through social media websites such as Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube, they have seen various creators, brands and entrepreneurs rise to stardom on their platforms. These success stories have outright dispelled the idea that one needs to work for a company in order to be wealthy. They have demonstrated that as long as one has a ‘fueled ambition, the right skills, and access to the internet, anything is possible.

A Deloitte study reported that 87% of this group are more interested in finding personal fulfillment rather than job stability. This highlights the level of importance that Gen Z puts on freedom of choice and having a clear purpose. Traditional jobs often seem constricted and out of sync with their need to pursue multiple interests. As a result employers must offer flexibility, meaningful work, and growth opportunities to attract Gen Z talent.

Freelancing – The First Move Towards Independence

Freelancing is one of the earliest activities undertaken by numerous entrepreneurs waiting from the Gen Z cohort.

A notable 52% of Gen Zs in 2023, claimed to have freelanced while rendering services in diverse fields such as graphic designing, content writing, social media management and software development.

Fiverr, Upwork and Behance, as for most of them have served as their marketplaces, and social media, are powerful tools in creating brands.

Also, this generation doesn’t miss out on the tech revolution as they self-teach skills from free courses available on Youtube, LinkedIn, Coursera, among others. They have shown extraordinary zeal and interest in creating Shopify ecommerce stores as well as just products for Etsy driven by the low barrier to entry in igniting a business.

Tackling the Hustles of Starting a Business

Other than the benefits of registering a company, starting a business comes with its struggles, but the ambition Gen Z possesses to become entrepreneurs is truly inspiring. While many Gen Z individuals have immense potential, challenges like limited capital, lack of experience, and intense competition in saturated industries often hold them back. However, this is precisely where they shine. Being resourceful, they first seek mentorship online, collaborate with peers, and then tirelessly explore innovative ways to solve problems.

Also, it is easier said than to maintain a balance between short-term earnings and having long term entrepreneurial visions. Many start as “solopreneurs’’ starting off with freelance work while slowly trying to build their dream ventures.

Implications for Businesses and Employers

The unwavering entrepreneurial spirit of Gen Z serves as a wake-up call for traditional businesses. Gen Z should be attracted and retained by firms, hence, they need to change how they strategise. There is out-there potential of traditional work intermingling with the inherent entrepreneurial spirit by providing employee creative freedom and turning them into intrapreneurs. Companies are able to then alter their structures and management philosophies that allows employees to spearhead projects for the company aiding in retaining them.

Organizations can also flesh out mentorship programs, work on innovation labs or think of ways to facilitate profit sharing to help start integrating with Gen Z. There are plenty of people however who would consider selling their smiles to be employed in such companies that would help them innovate and grow in spite of the plans that they may have in starting their own businesses one day.

The Future of Work

Gen Z voice for independence and a diffusion of power is not any longer a fad; it is, determinedly, a movement. This generation is fueling the recruitment market and enabling a new composition of workforce that is more agile, purpose driven, active and dynamic. They are not afraid to spread the word, the future does not only lie in the four walls of an office between set hours. It is going to be more remote and borderless than anybody can imagine, where fulfillment will be the top priority and people will use as many digital tools as possible, breaking all stereotypes.

Hustler culture, propagated by Generation Z, is about seizing the moments, crafting significant jobs, and designing the life they want. It’s not a matter of if they will do great things; it’s a matter of how great. The world better buckle up, because Gen Z is here to lead the charge.
